At CBC, our philosophy of ministry begins with a serious question: “What is the highest good, the ultimate goal we hope to attain?” In other words,
“What single purpose drives our thinking and, as result, our ministry?”
We have discerned from Scripture that the highest priority of every person and of our church is to glorify God at all cost. As believers, as church members, or as pastors, our ultimate duty and responsibility is to show the world that God is God and there is no one equal to Him. While some may view certain biblical commands that discipline, restrict, or specifically direct our actions or methods of ministry to be hindrances to effectively accomplishing the great commission, we believe that no biblical command—whether a “thou shalt” or a “thou shalt not”—when it is properly obeyed, ever hinders us from glorifying God. In fact any and every act of obedience is a personal declaration that God is God and we are not. We affirm His ability and right to rule every time we obey Him. This is the point!
The highest good for our lives and for this ministry must be to glorify God – to make choices and act in such a way as to allow God to be God in our hearts and in front of others.
Or, as Ecclesiastes 12:13 states it, “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” This statement of the highest good is critical because it is from this that all our decisions as to governing principles, methods, programs and the like are to be drawn. All that is done must be done with a purpose to glorify God and in a manner that glorifies God.
In seeking to apply this purpose to our church, we take as our primary governing principle for ministry the truths of Ephesians 4:11-16. The job of our pastors is to equip the saints in this local assembly to do the work of the ministry. To “equip” communicates both the idea of giving someone necessary tools and instruction to use them, as well as the idea of mending and strengthening that which is broken or weak. Our primary objective in reaching the goal of glorifying God with the ministry we have been given is to see people grow and change. The members of our church must be shown what they are to do, how and why they are to do it, and must be instructed in the art of teaching others in order to pass on what they have learned.
With these things in mind, we labor in our preaching ministry to systematically explain and apply the Word of God for the purpose of life change. We desire our Sunday service in particular to be a time where members can gather to worship as a body, be instructed in the Word and go out to evangelize; and where guests can be drawn to Christ as they hear God’s Word faithfully delivered to His children, who offer worship to the Living God in spirit and in truth. Accordingly, we desire to offer to God music that reflects His character, attributes, and message in its text, its style and in its presentation. We strive to produce from our body those who desire to develop the talents God has given them to use for His glory in the ministry of corporate worship. While certain styles of music may be appealing to our present culture, we seek to make our musical choices in light of biblical principle with an effort to please God first. God has given us a new song that will be seen by many who will fear and glorify Him. We believe it is not a musical appeal to personal preferences, but the act of true worship from changed lives that will best point people to Christ. CBC is still a small, but developing congregation, so guests may not see a wide variety of programs. We are praying for God to add to our body those who embrace the person and work of Jesus Christ and desire to employ the gifts and talents God has given them to further His work in and through our church. If you are in Christ, and desire to see Him work through you for His glory, we believe you will be able to do so at Community.
